dedication, feast of

dedication, feast of
An annual celebration in December lasting eight days to commemorate the restoration of the Temple, following the military successes of Judas Maccabaeus, three years after the abomination perpetrated in 167 BCE by Antiochus Epiphanes. The feast [[➝ feasts]] (Hanukkah in Hebrew) was associated with lights after the relighting of the Temple menorah, and there grew up the custom of lighting candles in Jewish homes—one additional light each day of the festival. Jesus was present at the feast, according to the time-scale of the gospel of John (John 10:22–3).
